What do seca products have to do with the standard sized buttocks?

The development of a new product

When a favorable decision has been made, the development team will be given the task to design the product and make adjustments according to the specified requirements. The product designs are based on theoretical principles, calculations and experience. In order to make sure the product is suitable for sale, the quality assurance department thoroughly and intensively tests the products in cooperation with other independent test laboratories. After the testing, the products are launched and introduced into the market. But how exactly are these validation tests conducted and what connects them to the standard sized buttocks?

Quality and safety are our number one priorities

We would like to give an insight into our quality assurance through an example of the seca chair-scales. The chair-scales have been rigorously tested for not only their maximum weight, but also their accuracy and stability. All of these factors are important in the testing of this product. The testing of these factors has been achieved through the use of the so-called ‘standard buttocks’. This tool has been developed to verify the chair-scales compatibility for the standard person’s behind, in terms of weight and maximum load. The standard buttocks tool consists of a metal plate which is then pushed onto the chair-scales by the use of a press.The test is carried out at 300kg both statically for 30 minutes and dynamically at nine 30-second intervals with the same weight. The backrest is also loaded with ten 30-second intervals of up to 56 kg.

Not only the seat and the backrest, but also the metal frames are meticulously checked and tested. From above, a spindle press pushes the weight onto the frame of the chair scales. Although the scales display peaks at 300kg, the frame itself is designed to withstand a weight of up to 600 kg. This will assure the chair-scale is equipped for all possibilites - such as someone sitting down very forcefully or collapsing onto the chair.
