Body measurement 2.0

The future of body measurement: seca 287

- A talking, fully automated measuring station that can read height and body weight within seconds, wirelessly transmitting data, sounds a lot like a vision of the future. But due to intense development and engineer work, it has today become reality. The vision's name is seca 287, a fully automatic ultrasonic measuring station suitable for radio transmission. So far, ultrasound waves are utilized in medicine mainly for imaging purposes. The seca 287 uses them to measure body size and weight quickly and contact-free. For achieving a high precision and reliability, the machine is equipped with three individual transmitters which send and receive data. The sensors capture the entire area of the platform and in only 200 ms conduct ten single measurements at a time. Thanks to a specially developed algorithm for evaluating the data, hair of any sort will not be taken into account in this process. The body weight is measured and then the Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated. The machine's platform is made of safety glass and two skid-proof areas in the shape of feet to mark the correct standing position.

To cover a large range of applications, the measuring station is developed for a body size between 1 ft 12’’ - 6 ft 10’’ and a maximum weight of 660 lbs. The scale unit is divided into 0.1 lbs steps for up to 330 lbs of weight, and for above 330 lbs, into 0.2 lbs steps.

Weight, body size and nourishment condition are clinical standard parameters and are part of any thorough status assessment. Through pressure of time and staff shortage, these parameters will often be neglected or even become responsible for increasing the already existing workload. This is where the fully automated operation system of the seca 287 comes into the picture. It allows for far more efficient time management. The voice assistant accompanies the patient through the entire process in 12 different languages, guaranteeing reliable data and supporting patient comfort. The encrypted data can then be transferred wirelessly onto a computer and fed into a electronic medical records system (EMR). Transposed digits, typos or lost data will now be a thing of the past.

Additionally, the seca 287 is equipped with a 360° wireless technology which enables communication with other seca 360° devices. After the measurement process is complete, a personalized patient report of the data can be printed with the seca directprint. The educational printout illustrates the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and assists the physician with opening communication to discuss weight related issues.

The print is also suitable for documenting and archiving information on the patient. Furthermore, it boosts patient satisfaction and promotes compliance.
