The UEFA European Championship

Health check-ups – an important part of being a professional athlete.

- With the European Championship beginning on June 10, a big event awaits the field of sports. Held in France this year, 24 teams, boosted from the original number of 12, will be fighting for the treasured UEFA trophy. The teams will be assigned to one of six groups, where four teams play for the entry into the last sixteen. After this, the sudden death rule applies. There is no doubt these games will offer spectators many exciting moments – penalties and stoppage time situations included! The players and their doctors on the other hand, will be prone to an increased workload and under a huge amount of strain.

Those among us who deal with sports medicine on a daily basis and know the affliction athletes are exposed to, are surely aware that a professional soccer player has to undertake a medical check-up once a year, especially when transferring to another team, to be eligible to play. This check-up, made up of two phases, will determine whether an activity in competitive sports, namely soccer, can damage the person's health. After a case history conversation, an orthopedic diagnosis is made for which the bone, ligament and muscle apparatus are analyzed. On top of this, weight and height are also measured. In the second part of the check-up, which is called the cardio-non-surgical examination, the athletes undergo a resting ECG test and an exercise ECG. Here, blood pressure and blood flow pace are determined. Furthermore, a medical ultrasonic image of the heart is recorded, followed by blood and urine samples which are thoroughly examined. Whether or not the athletes pass the test is the doctor's call – whose judgement strongly depends on his expertise as well as the quality of his medical devices.

To efficiently determine further measurements such as weight, body height or BMI with the highest possible precision, the seca 704 digital column scale with wireless transmission is the ideal solution. The scale is a real multi-talent as it can weigh not only small children, but professional athletes and adiposity patients too. Pairing the innovative seca 360° wireless technology with an optional stadiometer enables precise data to be transmitted via a special medical wireless protocol. It is also possible to extend the measuring station by an additional scale of length. Visionary, time-saving and versatile, this column scale is the perfect addition to medical daily life – even in times of rigorous demands and high quality standards.

The expertise for which seca products stand, is valued not only behind the scenes of soccer games. Appliances from seca have also proven themselves worthy during the Olympics for many years already – and will continue to do so for many to come.
