Merle Henning: health is individual

- In seca’s history of over 175 years, human health has always been the company’s main focus. It is the patients who benefit from the high quality devices and it is the people who have dedicated their lives to health care. By offering customized products and solutions, seca aims to support patients and the day to day work of people in health care, in the best possible way.

One notable seca success story comes from Hamburg-born talent Merle Henning and her company PuraVida – DAS Vitalkonzept (PuraVida – THE vital concept). In addition to her studies in business administration, she has numerous other professional qualifications. Her apprenticeship as a health, metabolism and nutrition coach is particularly valuable to PuraVida – DAS Vitalkonzept.

Henning’s motto is “individual – effective – personal”. She offers her clients a wide range of health services, including patient health analysis, nutrition and health consultations as well as several training sessions. Henning summarizes her company’s philosophy as follows:

“Health is individual – and therefore consultations should focus much more on coaching and offering instructions on how to do it yourself.”

The bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) plays a large role in Henning’s therapy. Through this method, an exact ratio of body compositions can be determined by way of various electrical resistances pulsated through the body at low voltages. Henning uses the seca mBCA 515 for BIAs in her practice because it has been validated through several medical studies and is renowned for its precise and reliable results. In her nutrition checkups, Henning combines the BIA test results from the seca mBCA 515 with a metabolism analysis. The results from these two tests can offer insight into a patients’ metabolism and oxygen supply. Both tests optimally complement one another, giving Henning a clear impression of the patient’s health.

One special aspect of the company’s procedures is that it also specializes in the use of electrical muscle activation (EMA). Unlike the electromyostimulation (EMS) that uses low-frequency stimulation currents. This new method works through medium frequency electrical impulses.

“EMA is practically the next step of EMA training, as the ‘modulated medium frequency’ stimulates the muscle directly. Its strong depth and volume effect enables impulses to flow through every tissue.”

By using the EMA method, Henning optimizes her patients’ training sessions and can achieve great results. The BIA then helps evaluate and document the change in body mass composition.

“In addition to strengthening the entire skeletal muscles, and figure shaping, the EMA training has a very positive effect on strengthening the pelvic floor, for example, after having given birth. I use the seca mBCA to document training successes and to visualize progress in dietary changes. I recently discharged a 56-year-old patient that had lost 8.9 kg. 6.6 kg of that was pure body fat, a small amount was muscular mass and the rest was water – it was a great success. The seca mBCA visualized this development very well.”

The seca mBCA 515’s prominent features are its operational functions and user friendliness that support the user in data evaluation. It can generate a printout on which all important data is visually processed. The data is then complemented by additional information and tips according to the patient’s current health status. This means that patients can be well informed about their therapy successes. With this visualized data, it is much easier for a patient to maintain their dietary and training plans.

“In nutrition coaching, I’ve experienced that the ratio of fat to muscle mass is the pivotal argument for motivating a patient to become active.”

Aside from counseling and treating patients, PuraVida – DAS Vitalkonzept also offers the program “Business in Motion”. For this, Henning and her team use their expertise and experience to provide advice to companies. They, for example, support health insurance companies in developing and optimizing strategies for ‘health days’ and other workplace health promotions.

Ultimately, Henning and her team’s main focus lies on individual health and patient needs. They combine various analysis and training methods, with the use of the seca mBCA 515 to achieve optimal results. Their main goal is to have a positive influence on their patients’ health in the long term.
