BIA - a diagnostic tool for outpatient care?

- Since the 1990’s, the bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) was introduced to many areas of inpatient and outpatient care. The BIA method is based on the electrical conduction properties of various tissues and their differences, which enable a precise and non-invasive measurement of a patient's body composition. Because the seca mBCA is versatile in its application with a large range of functions, the tool is used both in the hospital sector and also more often now for outpatient care. Primarily, it is used in – but not limited to: weight management, clinical nutrition, sport medicine and age management medicine.

It is also a valuable diagnostic tool for oncology patients with tumor diseases, as the seca mBCA can detect malnutrition and sarcopenia; thus helping treat these symptoms at an early stage. The seca mBCA also measures intra and extra celluar water, making it a vital tool for monitoring patients with cardiac or kidney related illnesses. Physicians can closely control and optimize their patient care when assessing vital parameters with the seca mBCA.

In addition to the stationary seca mBCA 515, seca offers a mobile bioimpedance device, the seca mBCA 525. Developed for convenient and precise measuring in the supine position, the seca mBCA 525 is ideal for measuring bedridden patients.

The seca mBCA is the only bioimpedance device which has validated all of its output parameters to the individual most precise reference method "Gold Standard" in one multicenter coherent study design.*Ideally suited for the precise assessment and monitoring of a patient's nutritional and hydration state; the seca mBCA also assists in identifying health risks that contribute to obesity. By monitoring vital parameters and providing patients with a summary of results, clinicians can further educate patients with understanding the key indicators and risk factors that contribute to chronic disease.

The seca mBCA is a BIA device, which multicentric studies have validated with the most accurate reference method for measuring a patient's body composition. The results correlate strongly with the respective gold standard and qualify our seca mBCA to be medically applied. Additional information on the patient's health can be obtained by means of phase angles.

The seca mBCA 515 is ideally adapted to the working conditions in hospitals and medical practices. After all, in order to obtain a truly meaningful BIA measurement (bioelectrical impedance analysis), we need to look beyond the many technical requirements. For one thing, the device has to be quick and easy to use for medical staff. For another, the measurement results have to be reproducible under normal clinical working conditions. These exact considerations went into the development of the seca mBCA 515.

The seca mBCA 525 is the mobile solution for bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Its low weight, good handling and precise measurement technology make it very efficient and versatile. Its technology is one of-a-king in the world because fat mass, muscle mass, and body water are determined with a newly developed measuring mat. It is automatically networked by Wi-Fi to the touchscreen monitor, which can store up to 100,000 measurements. This enables many patients to be measured and courses of therapy to be reliably documented for years.
