Medical science of the future - digitizing the health care system

- Wouldn't it be nice if doctors could take the time to see us properly and listen to our problems carefully? Unfortunately in reality, consultations between a doctor and patient last merely five minutes, of which only half a minute is spent by the patient describing his or her symptoms without interruption. Due to a multitude of non-medical tasks and an ever-increasing workload, it is getting harder for doctors to provide basic medical care. But by shifting, optimizing and reorganizing the workflow, doctors could free up more time for their patients. The use of modern technologies, in particular, shows great potential for process optimization. While many industries have made use of these types of technologies for a long time, modern medicine has demonized them. However, now telemedicine, networking and modern data management is slowly entering the everyday medical world.

Digital data transfer and management

Many diagnostic methods have been based on state-of-the-art digital technologies for years, but data documentation is still done on paper, which means that measurement values have to be copied and transmitted by hand. This not only takes up a considerable amount of time, but this method of data transmission is a possible source of error. Often, medical reports and doctor's’ letters are only available in the form of hard copies, especially for new patients, which makes it difficult to reconstruct their medical history consistently.

The direct transfer of measured data, as well as the storage of results in a digital patient record, could eliminate many of the error-prone, intermediate steps. It would not only improve treatment but also reduce the time spent on non-medical tasks, and thus free up doctors for more intensive patient contact.

Our seca 360 ° wireless technology represents a milestone in the area of automation and reduced documentation. All seca products marked with the wireless symbol can exchange data wirelessly to a printer, computer or between one another, through a separate and secure wireless channel. The data can then be easily put into a patient data management system (PDMS), which eliminates the possibility of typing errors, transposed digits and time-consuming manual transfer. Because the data transmission is wireless, the placement of our seca 360 ° wireless devices in a doctor's office or hospital is very flexible and can be chosen purely for its aesthetic.

A perfect example of this simple interaction between wireless devices, is the ultrasonic measuring station seca 286 and seca mBCA. The completely automatic measuring station determines the patient's weight and size and transfers height data wirelessly to the seca mBCA, which then measures the exact body composition and calculates multiple parameters to assist in determining ones overall health status. Subsequently measurement parameters can be wireless transferred and data can then be easily inserted into the existing PDMS.

Because transient errors can have fatal consequences - especially in patients who require close monitoring - the seca mVSA is also part of the seca 360 ° wireless portfolio. The seca mVSA combines the measurements of classic vital parameters with the bioimpedance analysis and reports an exact assessment of the patient's overall condition.

Not only is seca the world market leader in the field of medical measurement and weighing technology, we also pioneer the development of digital solutions. In the future, our development work will remain focused on the digitization and optimization of working procedures for offices and clinics, in order to facilitate a physician's daily work routine and to further improve patient care.
