The mechanical column scale – nostalgia with a modern spirit

- With a manually adjustable sliding weight, the column scale exhibits a hint of nostalgia. The scales, made of cast iron, are often enhanced with elaborate details and artistic fonts. They are forefathers to the contemporary versions of a scale. But you won’t only find these in museums. Physicians offices, hospitals and fitness studios often prefer using manual scales. Mechanical column scales have the special advantage that deprived of electrical components, they do not require electricity. They are also known to be extremely robust and durable. Furthermore, higher weights can be determined in a more precise manner with a column scale.

For customers who put value on quality and tradition, seca offers the seca 700. This device combines the advantages of a classic mechanical column scale, but with a modern design.

How to operate a column scale

Let’s begin with a short introduction. The sliding weight is named after its function of sliding along a rail. Whereas scales with two scale pans require the positioning of a counterbalance. Only the sliding weight in column scales has to be adjusted for the lever to move.

It is important that your column scale is positioned on an even surface and the measuring rod is aligned horizontally with the floor. For your convenience, the seca 700 has an adjusting screw, with which you can adjust the measuring rod’s position. Before initiating the weighing process, both sliding weights have to be set to zero.

When the patient is standing on the scale, the measuring rod leaves its horizontal position and tilts. The person operating the scale will now have to move the lower balance weight along the rough chart until the measuring rod tilts back to a horizontal level. The position of this weight balance now shows a rough estimate of the patient’s weight. It is best to slide the weight balance to a position a bit lower than expected, as the measuring rod will be balanced out with the upper fine chart afterwards. For this, the weight is moved along the upper rail the same way you have already done for the lower rail. Once the measuring rod is back to its horizontal starting position, the patient’s weight is balanced out and all you have to do is add the numbers on both rails to determine the patient’s body weight.

The seca 700 allows you to weigh your patients in a quick and simple manner. It was developed specifically for accurate measurements and durable use. It has been constructed from cast iron with a steel column. Thanks to its large and solid platform, patients with a weight of up to 485 lbs can still be weighed accurately. If you would like to take height measurements at the same time, a telescopic measuring rod (seca 220) is included with the seca 700. It is not only quality and functionality that seca guarantees with their products, but the design also plays a substantial role during product development. The seca 700 has been awarded several renowned design prizes, such as the Red Dot Award and the iF Design Award. The scale is not only highly functional, but it’s also a visual delight to have in your practice. If you are in search of a precise, robust scale with nostalgic and iconic character, the seca 700 is the right device for you.
